Purleigh CC Won by six wickets

Match report PURLEIGH WING THEIR WAY BACK WITH A WIN

A flighty flock of cricketers gathered at Purleigh playing field, home of the bittern, to find the groundstaff had been battling against a murder of crows that had spent the week pecking holes in the square. The home side were looking to get swiftly back on track following two close defeats that were hard to swallow.

A lost toss forced Purleigh to field first and it took just two balls for Melvin John to remove a rookie opener, clean bowled with a yorker for a duck. A second wicket soon followed for the quick bowler as Steve Rynn held a well-judged catch from a mis-hit shot, 22 for 2. Not to be out-done, Matt Oliver claimed the third wicket with a beauty of a swinging delivery that beat the bat to hit off stump, 30 for 3. Matt bowled his nine in one spell, removing the next batter for nought, 34-4 then vitally swinging one past the dangerous hitter Maasch for hawk-like keeper Ed Oliver to snipe a sharp stumping, 51 for 5. What a pity his partner Robyn missed his 9 overs, 3 maidens, 3 for 19. Jay Patel also hit the stumps and when Mark Rynn bowled opener Ingram with a slow loopy tempter for a Boycottesque 8 from 74 balls to make it 66 for 7 the Purleigh vultures were circling overhead hoping for an early tea. But Fairview skipper Donnellan gave his side a wagtail, taking the score to 110 before being bowled for 40 by a Melvin John beauty, brought back to stop the damage before things took a tern for the worse. Another Mark Rynn tempter produced a catch to end the innings on 113 from 37.4 overs.

With the tea break taken at last the ravenous Purleigh gannets were seen to shoveler their food down quickly, eagler to get back in the middle to complete the job with no chickening-out, as a chase of more than a hundred always has potential for a cock-up that can leave a team looking like a turkey. Opener Josh Taylor fell early, coot at midwicket, soon to be followed by Mark Rynn who was perhaps unlucky to be taken at cover by a crane-like stretch. That was 41 for 2 with skipper Freegard going well, dealing mainly in boundaries to avoid puffin himself out running with sore ribs. A partnership of 54 with Brad Barrick broke the back of the chase, although both batters were caught trying big shots, leaving Andy Bowles and Melvin John, egged-on from the boundary, to see Purleigh safely back to the nest after just 14.1 overs.

Purleigh will be looking to parrot a similar performance next week against lowly Rainham 3rds, but will egret it if they are gullible enough to make great tits of themselves by losing.
