Match report PURLEIGH BEATEN BY A NOSE AT BOREHAM

It was another good toss to win at Boreham where the going was hard and the outfield dry and bumpy, a no-brainer for Purleigh to bat first. Openers Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor were again quick out of the stalls, scoring neck-and-neck before Taylor was unfortunately out lbw for 33 at 74 for 1. Mark Rynn scored 14 in a stable partnership of 95 with the skipper while extras continued to go well until Freegard, who had been making hay, mis-hit a very short ball and was caught on the legside for 84. Rynn and Jordan Oliver batted at a canter, adding 36 for the 4th wicket until the loss of Rynn for 30. Jordan and Melvin John galloped on, scoring 37 together in quick time before the former was stumped for 22 in the 42nd over. Purleigh's innnings crossed the finishing line on 258 for 7 after 45 overs with extras the second-placed scorer with 54.

After a very leisurely nosebag time for tea, thoroughbred fast bowler Melvin John bowled five feisty overs without injuring a fetlock, Purleigh bridling when no. 3 bat Sharif appeared to deflect the ball onto his helmet, caught by Mark Rynn but adjudged not out. Meanwhile, Matt Oliver had removed one opener while O'Halloran rode his luck, hoofing multiple aerial shots to boost the score. Number 4 bat Akbar followed the same tack, unable to rein himself in from hacking across the line to similar effect, adding 133 with O'Halloran until the opener was caught and bowled off a swinging Alex Reeves delivery. Ben Wilkes could also not resist trying to cart the bowling but only managed 9 before holing out to Freegard at long on off Jai Patel. At this point Boreham were still well out in front, continuing to jockey hard for first place as a solid lbw shout right in front of all three stumps was met with the blinkers. But when Jai indisputably bowled Akbar for 86 the Boreham innings met with a bit of a hitch and Purleigh began to trot up on the inside. The first over of Matt Oliver's second spell brought two wickets but Boreham still held the whip hand with only five runs needed from the last three overs. Bowlers Matt and skipper Freegard, now back in the saddle with ball in hand, harnessed their best efforts in the next two overs, leaving the scores level with one over remaining. A dead heat still looked unlikely but the no.10 bat, who had a bit of a mare patting back Freegard's first five balls of the last over, finally broke the reins to squeeze the sixth delivery past the infield to pip Purleigh at the post by two wickets.

So it is on to next week when Purleigh will be looking to get back on track with winning form, hopefully with no handicaps - there's still plenty to play for with the knacker's yard nowhere in sight.
