PURLEIGH'S RECOVERY LEAVES WILLOW HERBS WEEPING
Eleven oak-hearted men of Purleigh assembled at the playing field, this week with a welcome return for the ever-poplar Andy Bowles to bolster the batting for a return fixture against Willow Herbs.
Skipper Chris Freegard lost the toss and was probably surprised to be asked to bat first on a hot sunny afternoon. With a crisp four struck in the first over it looked like Purleigh would make another strong start, but accurate bowling with five consecutive maidens and both Josh Taylor and Mark Rynn falling for early ducks left the home side struggling on 11 for 3 after 13 overs, with Andy Bowles well caught for two and the innings in danger of turning to ash. Jordan Oliver helped the skipper add 48 for the fourth wicket as batting got slightly easier against the change bowlers but Purleigh were still reeling on 67 for 5 after 21 overs and looking like deadwood when Olivers Jordan and Matt both fell in quick succession. But from little acorns, mighty oaks do grow, and the experienced Stever Rynn (30) added 60 with the evergreen captain who continued to wield the willow effectively and with patience, taking root at the crease to put on another 61 with Melvin John (20) and 58 with Jai Patel (20n.o.), ending unbeaten on 122 to take Purleigh to 244 for 7 in 45 overs, a superb recovery, possibly aided by Melvin's plane-speaking advice on running, delivered from the boundary in a deafening bark.
After tea and a quick spruce-up, Purleigh set to the task of trying to keep the Willow Herbs batsmen at bay. Four bowlers had been tried by the first drinks break at 15 overs when Herbs were 67-0 and looking good, while Purleigh could only pine for a wicket. Happily, Jai Patel soon obliged, inducing a fine nick to the keeper to prune back opener Fenton for 36. A corking catch in the deep by Jordan Oliver came in the next over off the bowling of Freegard, lopping off the second opener. When the dangerous Binnell was well caught behind off a lifting Freegard cherry at 101 the batting began to suffer from dieback. By the time keeper Austin was caught and bowled by Melvin straight after the second drinks break the innings was already beginning to look like a dormant bud, and the thinking-out-of-the-box introduction of Josh Taylor's flighted offerings dropping from the green canopy at the lower end somehow ripped out four batsmen root and branch, aided by more good catching and topped out with a stumping to finish the innings on 164 all out from 41.5 overs, Purleigh winning by 80 runs.
The spectating Purleigh elders enjoyed another good day's cricket crowned with a win and maximum points, while the players later decamped to the Fox and Hounds for lager and lime and apple cedar. Fact of the day: Chris Freegard has scored 300 runs for once out against Willow Herbs this season, quite a tasty average!
