Purleigh CC Won by nine wickets

Match report PURLEIGH MAKE LIGHT WORK OF RAYNE IN THE RAIN

Following the highest temperature of the year the day before, twelve Purleigh players assembled at their home ground in overcast weather, with Steve Rynn taking his turn to sit out.

Another lost toss for Purleigh meant that Rayne were able to bat first, a sensible decision as they only had 9 adult players plus a 14-year-old. Once again the Purleigh squeeze was applied from the start with Jai Patel and Matt Oliver bowling accurately and Rayne batting carefully, fearful of losing early wickets with only 9 batters available. Matt picked up a wicket in his third over, well caught at point by Alex Reeves, and bowled through to return superb figures of 9 overs, 3 maidens, 1 for 9, with only one single ball down the leg side. From his nine overs, first-change Shahid took 2 for 14 with 3 maidens, twice hitting the top of off stump, backed up by Chris Freegard's 9 overs, 3 maidens, 1 for 10, removing the other opener as Rayne's run drought continued. Keeper Ed Oliver was denied a lightening-sharp legside stumping off the same bowler and his face quickly turned to thunder as he swivelled to appeal and realised the umpire was not even watching, which left a bit of a dark cloud over his day. Rayne could only drip-feed runs into the scorebook to reach 90 for 4 after 40 overs but a late downpour of boundaries in the last 5 overs added 47 as the Purleigh fielding became a bit of a shower and they could not precipitate a late collapse with run-out chances missed and catches going begging. Rayne batted out their full 45 overs, which had not been in the early forecast, to reach 137 for 7. Poor Jai Patel's figures were a bit of a wet mess compared to the others but he did have to bowl at the death, never an easy task.

After tea, when drizzle cake might have been the order of the day, openers Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor made another good start under grey skies, seeding the innings with a run-rate of more than six an over as light rain fell. Rayne, being men short, were unable to set an umbrella field and both batsmen were able to drop the ball into gaps until at 84 from 13 overs, Taylor was run out for 21 after a mis-understanding, Freegard going nicely on 50. Mark Rynn was also untroubled for 16 not out as Freegard continued to give it some wellie, hitting 13 fours and 1 six to end unbeaten on 83, condensing the innings to just 23.3 overs, taking Purleigh to their target after Rayne's hopes had long since turned to vapour. Hail, the skipper!

Other results mean that Purleigh still sit on top of the table and next week we have the novelty of a game against a team whose name does not begin with the letter 'R'.
