Match report
PURLEIGH OUT-RANK RANKINS FOR NOW
Purleigh enjoyed the luxury of eleven fairly fit and mobile players for their visit to Rankins CC in a top-of-the-table clash at Broomhills in the heart of Rankins Farm. Despite a lost toss, Purleigh had first go at batting on what looked like a good wicket in warm sunny weather.
Openers Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor made another good start putting on 42 runs, of which Freegard had contributed 38 before Taylor was bowled for 4 in the tenth over. 54 were added for the second wicket with Freegard continuing to harvest the bulk of the bowling, Rynn unable to capitalise on several let-offs before being caught having gleaned 20 runs. On a strip that was not yielding easy runs Matt Oliver raked around for 8 while Freegard ploughed a lonely furrow, drilling bad balls into the pasture beyond the boundary to be on 97 out of 132 when Matt was caught. After a short stay at the crease by Jordan Oliver, bowled for 4 trying to push the score along, Freegard and Steve Rynn made hay, scything the ball around to add 50 before the loss of the skipper for 129 having reaped 22 fours. An on-the-hoof cameo of 15 from Jai Patel was a handy contribution adding 21 with Rynn senior who enjoyed a late graze on the bowling for a run-a-ball 32, assisted at the end by young Wes John. Ed Oliver was not required to use his Harrow bat.
After a pleasant tea interval matters turned to the riddle of which team would be the cream of the crop and top the table at the end of the day. Another tight start by Jai and Matt had Rankins behind the required run rate from the off, but sensible and correct batting meant that both openers were still at the crease at the drinks break and in a good position to push on. Jack 'Huth' Hardingham, making a welcome and effective return to the side, collected a vital wicket shortly after the interval, hitting the stumps via the edge with a quick full-length ball. Josh Taylor sowed the seeds of doubt in the minds of the batsmen with his flighted deliveries, squeezing one under a sweep to take the important wicket of the other opener, then saw keeper Ed Oliver catch a skyer in front of the wicket to remove the number 3 bat. A superb direct-hit run out by Matt Oliver sheared further inroads from the Rankins batting that now suffered a fallow period with few bad balls offered, which, combined with intelligent field placing, made it hard to score quickly. The batsmen fell further behind the asking rate with Chris Freegard bowling a miserly spell separating the wheat from the chaff by knocking the stumps back twice. Despite their intensive efforts, Purleigh were unable to bowl Rankins out, the hosts finishing on 171 for 7 aided by some village cricket golden comedy moments in the last twelve balls, with double overthrows and a dropped catch slightly blotting the copybook. Nevertheless, a win by 46 runs was convincing enough with another good all-round team performance that bodes well for next week.
