Match report A VERY VILLAGE AFFAIR

It did not bode well when the opposition asked to borrow a pair of wicketkeeping gloves and Ed Oliver had to hastily fetch his lending pair (which are actually quite a good pair) from his car. Things took a turn for the worse when the Rainham 3rd XI captain asked for a ten minute delay to the start as they had only nine players present and had to field first having lost the toss. Another ten minutes were wasted when a car load of three more players turned up causing a long discussion over who would be the unlucky one to drop out.

Eventually openers Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor got Purleigh off to a good start reaching 34 before Taylor was caught cuffing one to cover after 5.1 overs. Mark Rynn repeated the feat, this time to mid-on departing for 6 at 58-2 in just 8 overs. By now skipper Freegard was scoring freely, cutting loose after reaching his 50 because, in another 'village cricket' scenario he had to leave at 2.30 for a very important parental duty attending son JJ's 7th birthday party, but not before he was bowled for 73 (14 fours, 1 six), 117-3 from 15.2 overs. Andy Bowles and Jordan Oliver had time to play themselves in and added 51 together before Bowles was undone by a high full toss that on another day might have been smashed for six but today was held at mid-off, 168-4 and still 20 overs left. While Rainham went through their line-up giving ten players a bowl, Olivers Jordan and Matt steadily accumulated runs, Matt after a scratchy start found plenty of short balls to his liking and was the first of the pair to reach 50. Jordan, on reaching his maiden Purleigh half-century, immediately skied one to the keeper. The pair had added 110 runs in 13.2 overs. Jai Patel and Melvin John both perished having kept the scoreboard ticking, leaving Matt unbeaten for his best score of 73 not out, Purleigh ending on a massive 327-8 in 45 overs.

After tea, which included the added bonus of some of JJ's birthday cake, Purleigh took to the field confident of defending their score. After 4 overs Rainham were 4-1 and it seemed only a matter of time before the home side would wrap up a win. Due to a rather 'village' attempt at filling in the scorebook, details of the Rainham innings are somewhat sketchy and possibly not fully accurate but Matt Oliver deserves a mention for reeling off 9 overs, 5 maidens, 1 for 22 with very few bad balls. For the most part Rainham batted carefully, perhaps realising that 328 was beyond them so they just hoped to score as many as possible to pick up some batting points and build confidence for forthcoming games. Chris Freegard, back from the party having missed just one over of fielding, had other ideas, picking up a wicket in each of his first three overs, then cleaning out the last man for a golden duck in his 6th over to bowl Rainham out for 101 in 29.2 overs. Jai Patel, hitting the stumps twice, and Melvin John with exuberant and entertaining celebrations after a clean bowled and a good caught & bowled, should also be mentioned in dispatches for their efforts.

Next week, Rankins away will provide sterner opposition in a clash between the top two teams, separated by just two points after five games.
