Rayleigh Fairview v Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI on Sat 28 May 2022 at 1.00
Purleigh CC Won by eight wickets

Match report FROM DISNEYLAND TO RAYLEIGH FAIRVIEW

Skipper Chris Freegard was welcomed back from a Florida holiday by a full Purleigh eleven including President Dave Bowles standing in for son Andy who had some business or other in Monaco watching things go round and round very fast. A lost toss meant Rayleigh Fairview had first bat on an under-prepared looking wicket with long grass in the outfield. Jai Patel soon pegged back one opener's off stump with a quick delivery, 17-1. Jai and Matt kept things fairly tight, conceding only 33 in the first ten overs after which Melvin John, replacing Jai, soon bowled the other opener, 45-2. Fairview then built their only good partnership of the innings with batsmen 3 and 4 taking the score to 97 before Jai held his nerve to take a good head-high catch off Chris Freegard, having earlier made a crocodiley mess of a similar chance off Melvin that somehow slipped through the fingers. After drinks Freegard and Shahid had kept things tight apart from a short ball from the skipper that was clubbed for four and the occasion was greeted with a flypast by a Spitfire! Shahid settled into a good spell picking up the wicket of the number 3 bat who had scored 59 before being undone by Shahid's skiddy off-cutter, bowled middle stump. This was the key breakthrough as Fairview subsided from 113-5 to 122 all out in fewer than six further overs, keeper Ed Oliver contributing a silky-smooth yet razor-sharp legside stumping that prompted the umpire to comment 'it was like watching James Foster'. In truth it was merely some redemption for a scrappy keeping performance that cost ten byes, but they were well worth it for that stumping. All five Purleigh bowlers returned good figures (see scoresheet below), Shahid the pick with 8.5 overs, 5 for 20 - and he's on a hat-trick next game.

After tea the Purleigh reply began briskly, Freegard losing the brand new cherry over a high fence hitting a six in the second over. Good balls were defended and bad ones dispatched as 43 runs were accumulated before birthday boy Josh Taylor tickled one to the keeper for 12. The in-form Mark Rynn helped the skipper progress the score to 121, along the way Freegard passed 50, lost two more balls and had to supply one himself as the hosts had run out. Chris sacrificed a red-inker trying to hit a six to take the score past 125 and secure a batting point, but missed one and was bowled for 75. Matt Oliver completed the job on the first ball of the 25th over, Purleigh ending on 126-2. An early finish was probably appreciated by all as it was getting a bit chilly towards the end.
