Match report
PURLEIGH LOSE A CLOSE ONE AT LAST
Another sunny day, another game where Purleigh had to rely on a couple of guest players for a full team, and very handy players they were too. Jai once again won the toss and chose to bat with Josh Taylor taking first ball for once so that 'new boy' Medi could get at least a short look at the pitch and bowling. The pair made a steady start with Medi first to go having scored 24 out of 57 in 15.1 overs. From this point Josh found himself in unusual territory playing the anchor role and far from having an 'after the early loss of Taylor' event he carried his bat splendidly through the innings for 78 not out, almost guiding the team to a third batting point, ending at 174-9 in 45 overs. Along the way both the Rynns and Matt Oliver were out for just one run between them, Jordan Oliver making the next best contribution of 23, Jai 13 and Shahid 10 against some tidy and accurate bowling. Another 25 or 30 might have been a par score.
Purleigh needed to make a good start when bowling and got one in the second over, Mark Rynn taking an excellent catch off Matt Oliver's bowling. Jordan repeated the favour in Matt's next over as the other opener perished with another aerial shot. Boreham recovered with a good 3rd wicket partnership that took the score to 73 before skipper Kempster was brilliantly caught and bowled by Jai with a contender for catch of the season. Last week's centurion Ben Wilkes was out early bowled off his pads by a wickedly swinging delivery from Tipu and the game was evenly poised at drinks, 78-4 after 22 overs. Purleigh seemed on top at 103-7 removing Matt Wilkes, who cut a Colin Cowdrey-esque figure when batting (from the later part of his career of course), with another good catch in the deep by Jai Patel. But from here Boreham's 8th wicket pair batted sensibly, and rather than try to smash their way to the total took their team right up to the line with some excellent running between the wickets and by hitting bad balls to the boundary, grinding out a win with batting of a higher quality than the umpiring - dodgy wide calls were quite unnecessary as Purleigh gave away far too many genuine ones by themselves, and a few spilled chances along the way didn't help either, but they don't all stick. So the kind of game that Purleigh had become used to winning was lost in the last over as the ship ran gently into the sand rather than hit the rocks dramatically. But a return of 31 points from two games without our best player and regular captain is better than might have been expected.
