Match report PURLEIGH RISE FROM THE DEAD AGAINST HIGH EASTER

A beautiful sunny afternoon greeted the teams at Purleigh playing field. Stand-in skipper Jai Patel won the toss and chose to bat. Sadly both openers were quickly back in the hutch, Josh Taylor apparently undistracted by anything, just hit one straight to cover while Andy Bowles was done by a bail-trimmer when he played back instead of going forward to cover it. 12 for 2 became 21 for 3 when the in-form Mark Rynn was also bowled. Olivers Matt and Jordan started to steady the ship taking the score to 41 before Matt was bowled trying to smash a tempting slow delivery. Worse was to follow when Jai was run out by a direct hit with no addition to the score having faced just one ball. Drinks were taken at 64 for 5 (22 overs) and with Jordan and Steve Rynn at the crease the scoreboard continued to tick slowly if unspectacularly until the loss of Jordan in the 26th over for a very important 33 runs. The next two wickets fell quickly and at 89 for 8 in 30 overs things were not looking good for Purleigh and poor Jai was spitting feathers on his Purleigh captaincy debut. But the experience of Steve Rynn and Ed Oliver, determined not to throw his wicket away EVER AGAIN, held firm and took the score to 135 for 9, keeping the opposition out in the sun for longer than they were hoping and picked up a batting point along the way with Steve contributing a vital 47 not out. Jordan's mate Callum, kindly turning out for Purleigh, didn't trouble the scorers but he did make a very useful contribution in the field later.

That late partnership helped to swing the momentum a little way back to the home team and gave Purleigh a sniff of a chance to defend their total after tea. A necessary early wicket was snared in Matt Oliver's first over when Steve Rynn pouched a sharp catch at cover. High Easter then dug in and their batters looked capable of chasing the target but perhaps lost a little confidence when Jordan Oliver took the best catch of the match, plucking a hard flat hit from above his head to remove the other opener for 27 off Shahid's bowling. Importantly the change bowlers kept things tight and the batsmen could neither decide how to play Josh Taylor's flighted spinners, nor work out how to score off Shahid's mystery bowling. With five wickets down at drinks Purleigh were still in the game although High Easter were more than halfway to the target, and useful fifth and sixth wicket partnerships swung the balance back in their favour and at 111 for 5 were poised to win. But the Purleigh Brains Trust went into overdrive and experienced heads again used the bowling and fielding resources wisely. Jai brought himself back on to bowl quickly at the lower order and took a couple of wickets. With their tail exposed the High Easter batters were like rabbits caught in the headlights. A sharp catch at the wicket in Taylor's last over brought a proper number eleven bunny to the crease and he was promptly bowled first ball to wrap thing up for Purleigh. It was a super team performance with every single player making an important contribution among several stand-out ones all helping to produce a miracle. Check out the Purleigh bowling figures below!
