Match report
RIDING ALONG ON THE CREST OF A WAVE
The Purleigh gang kept the show rolling along today with a sixth consecutive win. Some eyes may be looking towards promotion but that remains on a fairly distant horizon given some enforced selection difficulties over the next two weeks. But today our bowling and fielding out-performed most of the batters as we beat early-season contenders South Weald 2nd XI by 69 runs.
Thankfully Steve Rynn won the toss on a hot afternoon to give Purleigh the advantage of batting first. After the early loss of Josh Taylor, Purleigh were making steady progress despite also losing Mark Rynn for 1 and Matt Oliver for 15, to reach 61 for 3 after 18 overs. Steve Rynn memorably set off to umpire in his undies, but was reminded of his lack of shorts well before he reached the middle. Purleigh's fourth wicket partnership between Chris Freegard and Brad Barrick was the best of the innings, adding 53 in just six overs with some big hits. At one point umpire Mark Rynn was pinged, not by the track and trace app but by a tracer bullet shot from Barrick that was hit too hard to avoid. Fortunately no damage was done except to Brad's score as he missed out on a deserved boundary. Sadly the fun ended when Barrick mis-hit one and was well held at midwicket, one of nine catches in the innings with South Weald displaying excellent fielding and catching skills. Once Freegard had fallen for 97 with a bit of a 'nothing' shot when a ton looked there for the taking, the best of the Purleigh batting was back in the pavillion for 166 with 13 overs remaining. Only eight of these were used as the team progressed to 190 all out after 40 overs. Alarm bells may have been ringing in the Safeguarding department of the ECB during the Purleigh innings when six-year-old JJ Freegard announced that Ed Oliver's helmet was 'a bit cheesy' but that quickly prompted him to take off the keeper's whiffy headgear and he probably won't want to borrow it again!
Purleigh took to the field after tea thinking that 190 wasn't a bad score on that track, but there was always a nagging feeling that they might regret leaving five overs unused, especially with the day's strong batting line up. But Jai Patel and Matt Oliver were again on the money and helped the bowlers save the batsmens' blushes, keeping the run rate at 2 an over for the first 12 overs. Shahid Yasin at first change made the breakthrough in the 13th over, aided by another superb catch from Jatin Bathla at short cover. Matt Oliver bowled a fine ten over spell that only cost 24 runs and South Weald slowly fell further behind the required rate. Scoreboard pressure led wickets to tumble regularly, a very sharp legside stumping by Ed Oliver helping to reduce the opposition to 65 for 4 after 25 overs. Notably the other eight wickets were all bowled, none of the batters being able to push on once they had played themself in. Jai Patel returned to pick up 3 for 31 after a wicketless first spell, Shahid ended with a wily 7 overs, 3 for 23 and the experienced Freegard finished things off in his ninth over with 3 for 35 as South Weald were bowled out for 121 in 37.4 overs, 70 runs short of a win.
All in all it was a good afternoon's work from the Purleigh troop, leaving the team camped at the top of the table, albeit somewhat precariously.
