Match report PURLEIGH TAKE THEIR SHARE AT STOCK

Arriving at Stock under gloomy skies both teams may have had their minds on the evening's impending football match, but nevertheless Purleigh delivered a clinical win, making it four in a row and five out of the last six.

Losing the toss, skipper for the day Josh Taylor was asked to field first, bucking the trend of recent weeks. Regular opening bowlers Jai Patel and Matt Oliver took the new ball and although Jai's first over went for eight runs he followed it up with a wicket maiden, then a maiden. With Matt also keeping it tight at the other end Stock were 2 down for 20-odd after eight overs, Jordan Oliver making good ground to catch one opener at square leg off Jai, and Jatin Bathla holding a contender for catch of the season diving to take a one-handed stunner at short cover off Matt to remove the second opener. Stock stalwart Richard Cory then dug in, despatching any loose balls to the boundary. But when Matt Oliver pinned the number 4 bat lbw with one that didn't swing away, he began to run out of reliable partners as wickets fell regularly at the other end. Change bowlers Shahid Yasin and Chris Freegard were again miserly, and Bowlesy chipped in exhorting Purleigh to keep the fielding effort going while he was comfortably resting on a bench just beyond the third man boundary. Jatin Bathla filled in as the fifth Purleigh bowler and after a rusty start finished with 5 overs 2 for 14, removing the number 6 bat with another catch of the season contender from Mark Rynn who made a very high swirling skier look easy, then bowling the dangerous Cory for 60 with a good ball that hurried on to the stumps. This left Stock struggling and Jai Patel returned to mop up the tail for a total of 123 all out, finishing with 8.2 overs, 3 maidens, 3 for 33. All the bowlers had figures worthy of mention, Matt Oliver 10-4-2-21, Shahid 10-1-1-29, Chris Freegard 9-2-1-21. Credit to Stock for batting out most of their overs leaving only 16 balls unused.

Tea was taken with Purleigh feeling confident that their strong-on-paper batting line up would knock off the runs in good time for the footie - but cricket can be a strange game. Fortunately, openers Freegard and Taylor were in no mood for funny stuff and despite a circumspect first over that went for just a single, the score had raced to 35 for 0 after four overs. Freegard in particular powered on in a chanceless knock of 85 not out with 7 fours and 7 sixes, Taylor providing good support with 36 (5 fours, 1 six) before he was caught with the score on 111, topping last week's 50 opening partnership with a century one this time. Mark Rynn hit one boundary in the three balls he faced before Freegard took matters into his own hands, hammering the last three deliveries of the game for 14 runs, taking Purleigh over the line to end on 129 with a batting point to boot.

Despite several Purleigh lads having a 'thanks for coming' game with neither a bat or a bowl nobody really minded as it was mission accomplished, finishing in good time for the kick-off!
