Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI v Rayne on Sat 19 Jun 2021 at 1.00
Purleigh CC Won by six wickets
Match report
RAIN, RAIN, COME AGAIN ANOTHER DAY
(but not too soon as cricket is much more enjoyable in warm sunny weather)
Heavy rain in the previous two days had made it impossible to prepare a pitch until matchday, so four Purleigh earlybirds arrived first thing to get the ground ready to play against Rayne 1st XI. Fortunately the wicket had been covered and the outfield drains well so conditions were better than might have been expected, even if it needed a firmer shot than usual to reach the boundary along the ground.
Steve Rynn won the toss, and sensing that Purleigh looked stronger as a bowling side this week, elected to field first. The Rayne openers batted carefully against generally accurate bowling and had reached 56 in the 15th over before Ed Oliver held a sharp catch at the wicket off a rising delivery from the wily Shahid. It was a day when steady bowling was hard to hit away, Rayne opting mostly for the aerial route eventually paying the price when Shahid held the no.3 bat at point off Steve Rynn, 83 for 2 off 22 overs. Jai Patel held a great catch off Melvin John from a well-hit but again uppish shot to leave Rayne on 109 for 3 from 28 overs, still not scoring quickly from pretty tight Purleigh bowling and fielding. At 122 for 3 they were well-placed to push on but at this point the wily Shahid, Jai Patel and Melvin John, invigorated by his first wicket, turned the screw, and the last seven wickets fell for only 25 runs. This included five from a Jai Patel no-ball, the highest seen at Purleigh playing field for many a year, although the ball had become wet and slippery by then as light rain had been falling for some time. Purleigh recorded some excellent bowling figures; Jai Patel 7.3 overs, 3 for 26; Matt Oliver 10 overs for 30; Yasin Shahid 8 overs, 2 for 21 and Melvin John 10 overs, 5 maidens, 4 for 19, enjoying his return to somewhere near full fitness with some accurate bowling and enthusiastic celebrations when he hit the stumps. A top fielding performance was rewarded with a chaseable total of 147 all out, and special mention in despatches must go to veteran club President Dave Geezer Bowles who turned out at short notice as Purleigh's tenth fielder. Had we played with nine men, 20 or more runs would likely have been conceded, possibly stretching the Rayne total out of reach on a low-scoring day.
After a damp and chilly tea interval the Purleigh reply began well with eight taken from the first over. This, however, was tempered by the early loss of Josh Taylor three balls later for seven, bringing Mark Rynn in to bat with brother Steve. The seasoned Purleigh stalwarts dug in, batting sensibly and never really falling behind the required run rate, hitting the occasional loose ball for four and putting on 99 runs before Mark was caught in the deep for 48. Nerves jangled slightly when Steve followed, well held at slip two balls later with the score still on 107 from 32 overs and Matt Oliver also perished in the deep five runs later. Fortunately at this point the Purleigh youth policy of Jordan Oliver and Jai Patel stepped up to the plate, steadied the ship and seized the day, knocking off the rest of the runs with 13 balls to spare. Jai even managed to squeeze out an extra batting point, taking the score from 146 to 150 for 4 with the winning boundary.
Overall it was a gratifying and hard-working team performance to win with ten players, onwards and upwards to next week and the halfway point of the season, when better weather can surely be expected.
