Match report GOLDEN DAYS

Another warm sunny afternoon saw an emphatic Purleigh victory in an enjoyable game against Tillingham 2nds, with some gold-plated performances - and a trio of golden ducks too.

Steve Rynn won the toss and wisely elected to bat. Despite the early loss of Taylor, Christian Freegard and Mark Rynn briskly pushed the total along until Rynn was bowled for 17 with the score on 110 in the 15th over. Matt Oliver then played an excellent innings, starting slowly but reaching a well-deserved second league fifty with the ninth of eleven fours in his score of 66. Meanwhile Freegard was going very big at the other end, taking 35 from one 9-ball over before he was caught on the boundary for 143 including 21 fours and 6 sixes. Brad Barrick, in his first game for a while, hit a quickfire 72 with 2 fours and 9 sixes while the bowlers were suffering in the heat.

A flurry of quick wickets followed as the other Purleigh batsmen tried to emulate the superstars towards the end of the innings, with the Tillingham opening bowler scooping a hat-trick in his penultimate over before finding himself on a second in his last over with two balls of the innings remaining. Ed Oliver spurned the chance to put Purleigh on a triple-Nelson to follow last week's 222 but at least the hat-trick was averted, Purleigh were not all out and 329-9 was quite enough thank you.

After another late tea, opening bowlers Jai Patel and Matt Oliver again gave Purleigh a tidy start, Patel clean bowling the Tillingham opener in his 3rd over at 15 for 1. Matt Oliver removed the other opener with a full swinging delivery and then repeated the feat to remove the next batsman for 1. 35 for 3 left Tillingham with a mountain to climb, and despite hitting some sixes off Josh Taylor he replied with three wickets including a good boundary catch by Brad Barrick and a Sarah Taylor-style catch (without the dive) behind the wicket by Ed Oliver off a reverse hit. Chris Freegard also chipped in with three wickets, all bowled and when Melvin John bowled the no. 3 batsman for 72 the game was truly up for Tillingham, ending all out on 184 from 43.2 overs

Only five bowling extras were conceded this week, and if Purleigh could field such a strong side more regularly, things could get interesting.
