Match report
BOWLESY'S BIG DAY OUT
What a difference a week makes! After four cold and wet games we at last had a warm sunny afternoon perfect for cricket, with the added bonus of a full eleven fairly fit players for a home game against Brookweald 2nd XI.
Purleigh welcomed Andy Bowles, released from parental duties for his first game of the season. Bowlesy was so keen to play that he arrived at the ground before anyone else, itself a collector's item.
After a delayed start due to both teams having players stuck in traffic on the A12, Brookweald won the toss and sensibly elected to bat as they only had ten men. Jai Patel opened the bowling with a maiden and with Matt Oliver bowling from the other end, kept things reasonably tight until the eleventh over when the Brookweald opener played one aerial shot too many and was very smartly caught high in the gully by Melvin John. Jai's next over produced a catch for Jordan Oliver. A tight spell of bowling from Andy Bowles was rewarded in his fifth over with a sharp stumping, Ed Oliver at last profiting having previously started to annoy everyone by whipping the bails off at any and every opportunity, on this occasion the batsman had no part of his foot behind the line. This brought the Brookweald no.5 to the crease and he signalled his intentions (and main scoring shot) by creaming his first ball for a huge six over cow corner. Bowlesy just laughed.
Brookweald upped their scoring rate and were threatening to make a decent score on a good batting wicket, but the timely combination of a drinks break and the introduction of the wily Shahid and the experienced Melvin John slowed the scoring rate and started to make wickets fall. Shahid had the dangerous and effective hitter well caught by Mark Rynn at midwicket after a fifty-partnership and both bowlers hit the stumps twice. Melvin clipped the top of off stump in exactly the same spot both times, and Shahid bamboozled the batsmen with swinging deliveries that nipped on to the stumps. When the no.4 batsman, having already survived three chances, was run out for 33 by a good throw from Matt Oliver, the game was up for Brookweald and they limped on until the 36th over to finish on 132 all out. S Yasin had the best of some good bowling figures with 7.5 overs, 1 maiden, 3 for 18.
Tea in the sunshine was enjoyed before the Purleigh reply began. Extras were racing away as top scorer while two early wickets fell, giving Brookweald some hope. At 16 for 2 Mark Rynn joined opener Andy Bowles (who had kept the opposition waiting while he customarily 'sent a friend to the seaside' before going out to bat) and the pair put on a relatively untroubled unbroken partnership of 121 (Bowles 76n.o., Rynn 36n.o.) to lead Purleigh to a comfortable win, Bowles dispensing some poetic justice by making the winning hit with a straight six of much greater style and quality than the one off his own bowling. Brookweald had tried eight bowlers in a fruitless search for some magic deliveries but the only magic moments were to be found post-match in the Fox and Hounds, where the happy Purleigh players enjoyed chips with everything and a side-order of healthy banter.
Next week the Purleigh crèche will be open, hopefully securing the services of our best players - it's never too early to start learning to love cricket on a saturday afternoon!
