Match report
The weather was the winner today despite some good quality cricket played by both teams in less than ideal conditions after a start delayed by one hour.
South Weald, the fittest and most athletic-looking opposition Purleigh have faced for some while, arrived in good time and were keen to start, winning the toss and inviting the home side to bat. Some loose early bowling gave Purleigh openers Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor the opportunity to make a quick-scoring start, until Taylor was forced to retire hurt with painful knee-knack.
Tighter change bowling slowed the scoring rate with P Stroud bowling through to return impressive figure of 10 overs, 6 maidens, 2 wickets for 11 runs. However, Freegard continued to score consistently off the other bowlers, being reprieved by a couple of dropped catches - one something of a sitter - and batted through to score 118 of the Purleigh total of 160-6 in 35 overs, only losing his wicket trying to smash a fourth six off the last ball. A full 45 overs would certainly have left the pitch and run-ups in poor condition for the second innings. Skipper Mark Rynn deserves a special mention for sportingly walking when the opposition were convinced he had nicked one to the keeper.
A welcome tea break allowed both sides to warm up slightly on a cool grey afternoon and South Weald, perhaps seeing dark clouds gathering, began their reply with some purposeful hitting to the leg side and some opportunistic or even risky running between the wickets. An early scalp was nearly taken when Matt Oliver made a diving grab for a firm shot through midwicket but it didn't stick. Amends were soon made when the same fielder made good ground to reach a looping shot again off the bowling of Jai Patel, well held at the second attempt while falling to the ground.
But the light rain that had been falling for a few overs became heavy enough to force the players off the field at 40-1 from 9 overs. Despite some hopeful waiting, the arrival of a heavy downpour signalled what we all knew was likely, and the match was abandoned probably much to the relief of veteran club president Dave Bowles who was getting decidedly grumpy after a third consecutive week of having his bits frozen off in the deep.
