Match report
Purleigh arrived for a 3pm delayed start at a wet and blustery Roxwell, evidently still not properly defrosted after a late and freezing finish to the previous Tuesday evening T20 game. Veteran club president Dave Bowles spent a second game fielding in the windy and chilly deep, no wonder he was found practically hugging the industrial heater in the Fox & Hounds marquee after the Tuesday game. Both sides deserve credit for completing a match in fairly challenging conditions, when many other games had already been called off due to the heavy rain that morning.
Winning the toss and choosing to field, Purleigh did not bowl anywhere near their best, serving up regular full tosses, short balls, no balls and ones that sat up invitingly off a length, all asking to be hit. And hit them B&R did, mostly avoiding all contact with the damp turf. But credit is due to the B&R opener who batted through for an unbeaten 115, even if he rode his luck a bit to survive two or three drops of difficult chances and several others that might have found a fielder on another day. After a good opening partnership and with steady scoring throughout, B&R reached 208-4 from their 30 overs.
Purleigh's reply started brightly, with Mark Rynn hitting the second ball for four. But much tighter bowling from B&R restricted scoring opportunities and the innings never gathered the required momentum to challenge the target. Even the welcome return of talisman batsman Chris Freegard was to no avail but he hopefully shook some rust off ready for next week. Battling knocks from league debutant Jatin Bathla (28) who hinted at bigger things to come with some forceful shots including a huge six, and Matthew Oliver (19n.o.) were not enough, Purleigh limping to 101-4 from their 30 overs, with B&R deservedly taking the points as the innings ended at 7.30pm, again in the cold. Roll on summer!
