Great Totham 2 v Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI on Sat 26 May 2018 at 13.00
Purleigh CC Won by 5 wickets

Match report On the back of a good victory last week, the Purleigh boys made the short trip to Great Totham. Various temptations lay ahead of the Purleigh boys this week, with an inviting pub across the road, the Champions League Final and a BBQ at Josh's house after the game. One of the first temptations - the pub proved to be too much to resist for most of the team as they enjoyed a pre match pint in the sun. It was only most of the team as the energetic Skipper was busy battling the Saturday traffic collecting Bowlesy and Kim from Fairlop station.

With the toss completed, the Purleigh boys took the field, and contemplated how the 25 yard boundary on one side would affect the game. First up with the new nut were the West Indian Express Melvin and Robert Huth lookalike Jack Hardingham. The Totham openers Chadwick and Dickinson looked to force the early pace with quick singles, some well judged and some not so, as Dickinson was run out without facing after some sharp work by Bowlesy and Matt Oliver.

The West Indian Express and Huth bowled well without much luck with Bulk shelling an easy chance at slip off of Huth. The next breakthrough came courtesy of another run out, this time from the rapier like arm of Chucky, running out other opening Chadwick for 24. After Bowlesy picked up the next wicket, Totham rebuilt with an aggressive partnership between Foxall and Hewer. As this partnership progressed, it looked like the Purleigh would be on the receiving end of a scoreline of 300+.

However, change bowlers - The Olivers (The Greenfingered Matt and John Flanagan lookalike Jordan) made inroads into the Totham batting line up and steadied the ship and helped keep the score to a chaseable level. Totham ended up their innings on 270/8 indebted to a positive 113 from Foxall. Matt ended up with 3-55 and Jordan 2-55 and the boys headed to tea in a positive frame of mind having strangled the end of the Totham innings.

With 271 set to win, the dynamic duo of the talismanic Chris Freegard and Bulk headed to the crease knowing that a positive start would put Purleigh on the front foot. And a positive start was exactly what they achieved. Both batsmen were aggressive and plundered boundaries, with Chucky hitting massive sixes and Bulk powering the ball over the boundary with brute force. Unfortunately the partnership was ended by the introduction of spin as Bulk was promptly caught facing his 1st delivery. This brought Bowlesy to the crease and he and Chucky kept the scorecard moving forwards at a decent rate until Chucky was bowled by a ripping off spinner from Hay for a very well made 50. Bowlesy was next to depart LBW trying to deposit the ball into the Bull car park and so chalk and cheese pairing of Matt Oliver and Elvis lookalike Stu Warren were next to take up the mantle. With Stu looking to win the largest 6 hitting competition, Purleigh kept the pressure up on the Totham bowlers.

Elvis departed for a powerful 33 and still with plenty of work to do the stoic Stevie Rynn joined Matt at the crease. With both batsman knowing they had a bit of time, they consolidated and built and built a partnership. Both batsmen played extremely well, both mixing aggression with watchfulness, with Matt hitting his 1st Purleigh 6. With the winning post in sight, Matt was bowled for a very well made 41 and cemented his position as most consistent batsman for Purleigh so far this season. The West Indian Express joined Stevie Rynn and the 2 played sensibly, taking the boundaries when on offer and both had their heads on to see Purleigh over the line for a very good victory.

Various trips were made by Purleigh players to talk strategy with the President and Terry Oliver at the Bull pub, with both enjoying the delights of Birra Morretti, or as they called it Moriati and victory was rounded off by watching the Champions League and a hearty BBQ at chez Taylor afterwards.

This was a game that could have easily got away from the Purleigh boys, but through grit, determination and all of the called upon batsmen contributing, victory was secured with 3 overs to go. Another great performance and good togetherness displayed throughout.
