Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI v South Woodham Ferrers on Sat 19 May 2018 at 13.00
Purleigh CC Won by 30 runs
Match report
Purleigh eventually turned up to the 2018 season with a convincing 30 run victory over local rivals South Woodham Ferrers.
With the Royal Wedding being beamed into the Long Room at Purleigh HQ a capacity crowd of about 70 people descended on the playing fields, built a new stand - The Barbecue & Beer Stand, watched the Royal Wedding and then rounded their day off seeing Purleigh pluck a victory.
The energetic Mark Rynn won the toss and elected to bat on another decent looking track on a hot day. Opening pairing of the talismanic Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor ambled out to the crease to face opening bowling of Royce and Hatcher. The dynamic duo were progressing well for about 5 overs until Josh was yorked by Hatcher for 5. This brought Andy Bowles to the wicket to join Chucky with the wise words of Mark Rynn ringing in his ears. However, before the Bowlesy / Chucky partnership could really gather pace, Chucky got a ripper from Hatcher that nipped back through his defences and he departed for 19.
Stevie Rynn was the next to be passed the batting torch, but again he was cleaned up by another big cutter from Hatcher for a stoic 0. At 51/3 Purleigh knew they needed a partnership to knit their innings together, and that is exactly what they got when the greenfingered Matt Oliver joined Bowlesy at the crease. With both batsmen being watchful at first, their partnership built and built, with Bowles playing some lovely straight drives and pick ups off his legs and Matt combining grit and determination with some powerful shots and positive running. The pair marshalled the bowling well and ended up with a brilliant 145 run partnership to see the Purleigh to 196/3 off of their 45 overs. Bowles finishing up with a superb 101* and Oliver an equally impressive 40*
Finally the Purleigh bowlers had something to bowl at !
The South Woodham reply began in earnest with Rowe and Ja Royce first up to face new ball attack of Melvin John and Shahid Yasin. The West Indian Express and Boom Boom both opened up with an economic and probing couple of overs, with Melv finding pace and bounce in the pitch that no other bowler had and Boom Boom teasing the batsman with crafty outswingers and cutters. Shahid was first to strike clean bowling Rowe, who was looking to deposit him into the field at the ditch end for 1. After 7 overs SWF were 7/1 and the Purleigh squeeze was in full effect. Boom Boom continued his excellent openiing spell by next cleaning up Ja Royce for 1 as he played back and looked to hit one as the pressure built.
A period of consolidation that followed for SWF as Jackman was joined by Rhino Permanand at the crease and both batsmen played sensibly and looked to build a partnership. With Rhino looking to attack where possible, Purleigh knew they needed to break the partnership to take back control of the game. With Rhino suffering the effects of a cold (and several quick singles) he was brilliantly run out by Melv for a well made 49 (definite jug avoidance) and Purleigh knew this was the opportunity they were after.
The introducing of the youthful Jordan Oliver - who bowled a fantastic composed and mature spell along side the energetic Mark Rynn (who was aiming to stake his claim as Purleigh's premier spinner again) squeezed the Woodham reply even further. Jordan took the important wicket of Jackman, who chopped on for 53 and from then on in, Purleigh closed out the game with Melv returning to claim a couple of well deserved wickets and Mark Rynn calmly affecting a run out.
As the sun set on the beautiful Purleigh ground, every Purleigh player could sleep well knowing that each and every one of them contributed to a hard fought and determined performance that at one stage could have gone either way.
