Match report The opening day of the 2018 season started with plenty of positivity, a new signing in Stu 'Elvis' Warren, 16 teams entered into the Purleigh Fantasy League, on paper a strong starting 11, new training shirts, trousers, shirts and caps and the greenfingered Matt Oliver's tea on the menu, courtesy of Robyn.

With the game scheduled for a 12 start due to several players heading to the Bellew v Haye fight, everybody including Shahid was at the ground by 11.15, which is unheard of. The late drop out of the Youthful Jordan Oliver, meant an even more youthful Ahmed Yasin stepped in. The 12 start turned into a 12,30 start as most of the Rankins team got lost as they attempted to navigate their way around the Dengie Peninsula.

2018 skipper - the energetic Mark Rynn won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a good, hard track that has been lovingly tended to by joint groundsmen, Josh Taylor and Matt Oliver. Spirits were high amongst the Purleigh boys as new opening partners Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor strolled out to the wicket. All was going well until the 4th over when Bulk was cleaned up for 5, and things never really got going for Purleigh after that. Andy Bowles was caught in slip for 10, Stevie Rynn decided to kick the ball onto his stumps for a golden (-25 fantasy points and a further -25 as he had made himself captain), Dan Cann out for a duck mistiming a slap to mid on and Elvis out for a duck padding up to a straight one. Just as the Purleigh boys thought things could not get worse, Chucky was trapped LBW for 22 to a delivery that kept a bit low. At 33/6 the outlook was bleak to say the best.

What happened next was the best passage of batting play as the greenfingered Matt Oliver (30) played a well fought, solid and gritty innings with Mark Rynn (7). The pair put on 35, stabilising the score for a bit until Rynn was brilliantly run out by the opposing skipper. After this brief period of resistance the rest of the innings fell apart again and Purleigh limped to 107 all out. Even a couple of lusty blows from Boom Boom Shahid could not bolster the total much.

The boys enjoyed a decent tea and contemplated the fielding performance. Needless to say, we would have to be on our A game to get a result out of this one.

What happened next was that none of the bowlers found any real rhythm, the West Indian Express Melvin John bowled a tidy opening spell with Boom Boom and contained the score. The only breakthrough came from the hand of the talismanic Chucky, getting Warner caught by Josh in cover for 10. After that Bolton and Alborn, who played a great knock, scored the required runs with ease and sent Purleigh to a resounding 9 wicket loss.

The positives were the team spirit and effort were there until the last ball and everyone agreed it was 'one of them days' and we would need to put it behind us and move onto next week against Navestock.
